Embracing the Power of Assuming Best Intentions

Strengthening Our School Community - a message to faculty from a school leader

As we continue to shape the vision of our school, one of the most powerful ways we can strengthen our community and advance our shared goals is by embracing a mindset of assuming best intentions. This approach holds particular importance in the conversations we have with each other—whether they be in meetings, in the classroom, or during casual interactions in the hallways.

Our school thrives on diversity, not just in the backgrounds of our students, but also in the perspectives and experiences of the adults who work here. In every conversation, we have an opportunity to hear from different viewpoints, which is vital as we move forward together. However, in a community of diverse opinions and experiences, there will inevitably be times when a colleague’s suggestion or viewpoint challenges something we are doing. These moments can sometimes feel uncomfortable or even painful. After all, we all deeply believe we are doing our best work, and when someone questions or offers an alternative approach, it can feel more like a critique than a constructive conversation.

But here's the key: If we approach these moments with the assumption of best intentions, we open the door to innovation, collaboration, and stronger relationships. It’s essential to remind ourselves that every adult in this building is working toward the same goal: what is best for our students. None of us are here to harm, undermine, or "attack" one another. When someone speaks up, it’s not an assault on your efforts; rather, it’s an invitation to think differently, to push the boundaries of our thinking, and to improve together.

This mindset requires us to shift from a place of defensiveness to a place of curiosity. The discomfort we sometimes feel in these conversations is not a sign of failure, but rather an opportunity for growth. It's a prompt to dig deeper, to ask more questions, and to seek greater understanding. Instead of viewing challenges as threats, we can choose to see them as opportunities for collaboration. After all, we are all on the same team, working toward a shared vision.

For me, assuming best intentions has been a guiding principle in my own journey. It has helped me navigate difficult conversations with greater peace and understanding. It has allowed me to see criticism as a gift rather than a personal attack, and to view my colleagues as partners in growth, rather than rivals. Over the years, this mindset has contributed significantly to my own personal growth, and I truly believe it can do the same for all of us.

Imagine what we can accomplish if we all consistently approach our conversations with this mindset—if we trust one another’s motivations, even in moments of discomfort. Together, we can build a culture where every conversation becomes an opportunity for growth, innovation, and stronger bonds. In doing so, we’ll create a more supportive and dynamic environment for our students, and for ourselves as educators.

Let’s continue to forge ahead, embracing the discomfort, trusting the good intentions of our colleagues, and working together to create an even stronger, more innovative school community. Together, we can ensure that every voice is heard, every challenge is met with collaboration, and every individual has the opportunity to grow.
